From vineyards close to the ocean in Monterey, the wine has flavors of yellow apple, stone fruit & pear, accented by hints of vanilla & caramel. On the palate, it is medium bodied, crisp & balanced with bright fruit & lingering notes of sweet oak on the finish.
Dry Canyon Pinot Noir, , California
A delicious, easy-drinking Pinot Noir that really delivers, this Pinot Noir comes mostly from the Central Valley. Steve Schaefer and his family have been farming vineyards there for over years. Giving up lots of juicy Bing cherry, strawberry & spice, this medium bodied, rounded, well-made and thoroughly enjoyable effort will drink well for - years. It's a killer value.
Melini Chianti, , Tuscany, Italy
This Chianti is another terrific, value-priced red. Sweet cherries, flowers and spices are some of the notes that jump from the glass in this vinous, fruit-forward Chianti. It’s the perfect Tuesday night dinner red. Food pairing-wise; Chianti is great with tomato based sauces. Pizza is a natural and all classic Italian fare.
Flor De Goda Garnacha, , Campo De Borja, Spain
Some of the oldest Garnacha vines in all of Spain are in Campo de Borja, and it’s honestly our favorite expression of this yummy grape. It’s an easy to understand, jammy, juicy wine with gobs of strawberry fruit, some cracked pepper and aromas of violets. Enjoy it over the next years with burgers and barbecued or duck, wild game, or lamb.
Spanish Quarter Tempranillo / Cabernet Sauvignon, , Catalonia, Spain
This blend of % Tempranillo and % Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark garnet color, sweet plum, tobacco, and toasty oak notes in the nose, round, gentle, graceful flavors, a silky texture, and a heady, seamless finish. Perfect for roasts and stews during the chilly months or things on the grill as the weather gets warmer.
Saverio Faro Nero D'Avola, , Sicily, Italy
This delicious, bistro style red is perfect for all classic Italian fare. It is dark ruby-hued and has a deep, spicy, nose with vibrant strawberry and cherry notes intermixed with loamy soil/volcanic earthiness and roasted herb characteristics. Round and ripe, it will offer up-front, easy drinking for another - months.
Château Beauséjour Fronsac, Bordeaux, France Organically Farmed!
From Fronsac, just outside of Saint Emilion. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Haut-Bicou is a family owned, organically farmed estate located in the northern part of Bordeaux. Ruby color with a nose of blackberry, strawberry, toasted oak, and a touch of dusty cocoa and spice, the finish has ripe tannin and nice freshness.
Bieler "Born To Run" Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington & California
Charles Bieler has always been a bit of a rule breaker. When he was and had just finished school, he bought a Cadillac, painted it pink and drove around the west coast selling his father’s rosé out of the trunk. That was years ago, and now Charles is a well established winemaker in his own right. This wine is blend of fruit from Columbia Valley near Red Mountain and a vineyard on the west side of Lodi. It has great structure but big, jammy rich fruit. Great for a big steak or burgers or barbecue.
St Hilaire Blanquette De Limoux, , Languedoc, France
The monks of St Hilaire were the first to put the bubble in the bottle, about years before some guy named Dom Perignon was making wine in Champagne. It’s made with a local grape called Mauzac as well as fan favorites Chardonnay & Chenin Blanc. It’s made in the Champagne method and has ripe apricot and citrus notes, flowers, mineral notes and beeswax. It’s easy to drink and hard to forget. $
Calvet Menetou Salon, , Loire Valley, France
I know, I know. It’s $. First time we’ve ever had a wine more than $. I won’t make a habit of it. But this is a really outstanding deal. If you’re not familiar with Menetou Salon, it’s Sancerre’s neighbor. Same grape (Sauvignon Blanc), same soil, same weather. Smaller appellation and obviously less well known. But this is an absolute steal. It displays a lemon-lime, mineral, and white flower-scented nose. It is rich, has excellent depth to its white fruit, stone, acacia blossom, and citrus-flavored personality, and exhibits excellent purity of flavors. Was $ Now $
Jaboulet Parallele Blanc, , Rhone Valley, France Organically Farmed!
The Paul Jaboulet is legendary in the Rhone Valley. It was founded in and has been among the best estates in the Rhone. Since Caroline Frey took over in , she has taken the winery to a whole new level. The wines are better than ever and they are now farming organically & biodynamically. The wine is a blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Marsanne. Ripe peach, pineapple, honeysuckle and a touch of tangerine all emerge from this medium-bodied, fresh and crisp white that has beautiful intensity and length.
Chante Cigale Cicada Blanc, , Languedoc, France
Chante Cigale is a great Cheateauneuf-du-Pape producer and they make this fun little wine from grapes in and around the Rhone Valley. Viognier comes from the northern Rhone along with Sauvignon Blanc and Picpoul from near their estate in Vaucluse. It’s a medium bodied white with tons of floral fruit, all stainless steel, and just an absolute delight. Perfect with richer seafood or poultry dishes and pasta.
Site Riesling, , Mosel, Germany
Aromas & flavors of lime zest, peach & spiced tea and stony minerality. Dry, fruit forward and beautifully balanced, it’s perfect for holiday gatherings, party appetizers or Asian cuisine. It has .% alcohol, so just the smallest touch of sweetness that is perfectly balanced by the bright acidity of the Mosel.
J. Bookwalter “Readers” Chardonnay, , Columbia Valley, Washington
Another classic from our dear friend John Bookwalter. Their Readers series are just stellar values. This Chardonnay is sourced from the Gamache Vineyard, planted in . It fermented predominantly in stainless steel, although % of the wine was fermented in neutral French Oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation retains the freshness of the fruit. It’s loaded with sweet citrus, juicy peach, golden apple, and a touch of vanilla crème. There’s a lingering mouthwatering finish with notes of lemon and white tea. $
Faustino "Art Collection" Viura Chardonnay, , Rioja, Spain
Here’s a very cool blend from a very old Rioja producer. Viura is a traditional lighter bodied wine from Rioja and eastern Spain which brings notes of citrus and melon. The Chardonnay brings body as well as some pineapple and apple fruit. All fermented in stainless steel which keeps it light on its feet but has some buttery notes from malolactic fermentation.
Rascal Pinot Noir, , Oregon
When we are choosing wines for this value list, great quality & value are paramount. But when there’s a great cause as well, we move them to the front of the line. A portion of the proceeds from all of their wines supports dog rescue organizations and shelters. Bright cherry and cranberry fruit, lovely spice and dusty cocoa notes and a that beautiful texture that defines great Pinot Noir. $
J.M. Aujoux Beaujolais Nouveau, , Burgundy, France
From our dear friends at Aujoux, here’s a look at the first release from the heralded vintage in Burgundy. This year’s Nouveau is fresh and bright with pretty flavors of strawberry, cranberry and spice. It will be an all around crowd pleaser at any holiday event.
Maison Les Alexandrins Syrah, , Vin De France
This is Syrah and a splash of Viognier co-fermented from a vineyard just outside the northern Rhone Valley. As such, it gets labeled as Vin de France although you’re just a stone’s throw from the famous vineyards of Hermitage. That’s great news for us as it keeps the price down. Currant and blackberry fruit, pepper and juniper spice and ripe tannin makes this deliciously drinkable and an excellent pairing for barbecue & burgers.
Perrin "Nature" Cotes Du Rhone, , Rhone Valley, France
The Perrin brothers from Chateau de Beaucastel craft this beauty from vineyards in the Southern Rhone. It’s a / split of Grenache and Syrah that was raised all in stainless steel tanks. Strawberries, raspberries, dried herbs and dusty cocoa characteristics all emerge from the medium-bodied, rich, chewy Southern Rhône that has good freshness and sweet tannin. It’s a terrific Côtes du Rhône to drink over the coming - years. Was $ - Now $
Sanssouci Le Rouge, , Languedoc, France
The French expression sans-souci means “without a care.” Le Rouge is a classic blend of Syrah and Grenache. It shows the lush red fruits and floral character that are typical of Grenache, together with the brambly blackberry and dark fruits of Syrah. The wine is concentrated and plush on the palate, with ripe, spicy fruit and integrated tannins. $
Avignonesi Cantaloro Rosso, , Tuscany, Italy
Delicious Super Tuscan from one of our favorite Vino Nobile producers. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Sangiovese. This perennial best buy in the wine press is filled with black cherry and plum fruit, a touch of that Italian rustic spice and loads of personality. It really shines with classic Italian fare.
Santa Wine Company "Little Helper" Red, , California
This perennial favorite is back!! This year’s blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Pinot Noir. It’s a fun, fruit forward wine with a dark purple color, as well as a super nose of cherries, black currants, pepper, spice, and dusty cocoa notes. Full-bodied and richly-extracted, with copious quantities of berry fruit, excellent purity, and an expansive, silky-textured finish.
Indaba Mosaic Red Blend, , Western Cape, South Africa
This blend of % Cabernet Sauvignon, % Merlot, % Cabernet Franc, % Petit Verdot is not the most spectacular wine you’ll likely taste this year, but it is darn delicious, easy to understand and very easy on the wallet. It is fresh and bright with black raspberry, wild strawberry and cherry. Medium-bodied, the blend offers a balanced structure with a juicy frame that is open-knit and ready to go with grilled chicken, stir fry and meatloaf.
Chateau Grand Rousseau, , Bordeaux, France
An absolute steal! Chateau Grand Rousseau is a medium to full bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot. Ruby color with a nose of blackberry, strawberry, toasted oak, and a touch of dusty cocoa and spice, the finish has ripe tannin and nice freshness.
McManis Cabernet Sauvignon, River Junction, California
Another family winery that always over delivers, this Cabernet is full throttle & dark garnet in color with a bouquet full of blueberry, blackberry and black cherry notes and a hint of smoke. Medium-bodied on the palate with juicy black currant and black cherry flavors, it finishes with rounded, creamy tannins and a hint of mocha.
